SUMMARY:CITY SHAPERS COLLECTIVE: Mobility in Urban Spaces
DESCRIPTION:City Shapers Collective was launched by Mod Foundation as a long-term initiative examining how design influences Bengaluru’s transformation and future. Conceived as more than a platform for dialogue\, the Collective positions design as an active tool for engaging with the city’s evolving challenges\, bringing together practitioners\, researchers\, policymakers\, and civic actors to collectively imagine pathways for urban change. \nHow do we move through the city?  \nBengaluru is at an interesting moment in its mobility story.  \nFootpaths are being cleared in the name of pedestrian movement. Tunnel roads\, underpasses and road-widening projects are being proposed to improve traffic flow. Metro infrastructure is expanding\, while the city continues to struggle with inadequate public transport capacity and fragmented pedestrian networks.  \nAt the same time\, these interventions raise a larger question:  \nAre we building a city that moves people\, or a city that moves vehicles?  \nMobility is often reduced to questions of traffic\, speed\, capacity and infrastructure. But the experience of moving through a city is much more complex. It is about who can move\, who cannot\, where people feel safe\, where they can pause\, and whether they can participate in public life.  \nThis edition of City Shapers Collective at BLR Design Centre looks at mobility through the everyday experience of navigating Bengaluru — walking to school\, waiting for a bus\, crossing a road\, sitting on a katte\, taking the metro\, cycling through a neighbourhood\, or simply spending time on a street.  \nThe conversation brings together different perspectives to ask what it would mean to build a mobility system around people and urban life\, rather than simply the movement of vehicles.  \nSpeakers:\nRhea Karan – Project Manager\, Purpose; (Co-Lead\, Sustainable Mobility Network)\n\n\nRhea Karan is a Project Manager at Purpose\, a global social impact organization that works on shifting narratives and building movements across climate\, public health and equity. At Purpose\, she co-anchors the Sustainable Mobility Network (SMN)\, a pan-India coalition advancing clean\, inclusive and accessible transport for all. She has led and contributed to research and public dialogue on women’s bus subsidies\, the everyday realities of public transport use\, and non-motorized transport solutions. Her work focuses on strengthening mobility systems so that they move beyond access and affordability to safety\, dignity\, and equity. \n\nDevina – Founder & Practice Lead\, Mudito\nDevina leads Mudito\, a safety-as-design social enterprise operating on the premise that safety is the condition that makes everything else possible: access\, participation\, rest\, return. The practice spans public space and mobility\, cultural institutions\, childhood and care\, and digital platforms. Mudito also manages textwhenyougethome\, a narrative movement and archive of over 1000 first-person accounts of everyday safety from more than 120 cities across 52 countries. This is built on the observation that the small calculations people make to get home are evidence of design failure\, not personal caution. Her current work explores what a city looks like at a child’s height\, at a delivery rider’s speed\, and after dark. \nTejashwani – Manager – Community Resiliency at United Way Mumbai \nTejashwani is a development professional with over a decade of experience across psychology\, communications\, and community resilience. She works at the intersection of child wellbeing and urban mobility. As part of United Way Mumbai’s Community Resilience team for the past three years\, she has led safe mobility programmes for the city’s most vulnerable road users\, work that puts her directly in conversation with how children navigate\, and are put at risk by\, urban infrastructure. Her foundation in Psychology and Education (Ambedkar University & Delhi University) has long anchored her in child centred work: she worked as a psychologist at the mental health unit of a Delhi government shelter home housing 120+ children under the Juvenile Justice Act\, and later designed a citywide gender sensitization programme with auto rickshaw drivers\, early\, hands on experience with how public transport actors shape safety for the city’s most exposed users\, including children. She brings this rare combination of clinical insight into child development and lived experience designing mobility interventions to the question of what child safe cities actually require. \nRSVP for the event here. \n
